Co-teaching Approaches

ONE -
1 teach, 1 observe/assist/support
TWO -
Parallel teach
  • 5-10% of the time

  • One teacher is available for on the spot support

  • The whole class remains together 

  • 30-40% of the time

  • Each teacher instructs 1/2 of the class

  • Teachers instruct on the same content

  • Teachers may present the material in a different way or use different material

  • Academic expert would have access to struggling learners

  • Students are in smaller instructional groups

THREE -
Station teach
  • 30%-40% of the time

  • Teachers divide the instruction content into parts and setup centers in the classroom

  • Co-teachers target instruction in flexible groups

  • Students rotate or spend a designated amount of time at each station

  • Students may be working independently during the rotation time

FOUR -
Alternative teach
  • 30%-40% of the time

  • One teacher will teach the large group while the other teachers a small group, requiring specialized instruction

  • Small group instruction: Basic, On target, or advanced - depending on student/class needs

FIVE -
Team teach
  • 5-10% of the time

  • Two teachers share in the process of instructing all students at the same time

  • May occur in large group

  • Facilitated small groups

  • Monitoring students working independently
